2020 LMSF Scholarship Recipient Avery Davis

Avery Davis – Sachem North High School & Eastern Academy of Applied Technology will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

I knew I wanted to be a pilot since I was nine years old, from the moment I got on an airplane to go visit my family in Jamaica, WI. The pilot was just coming in from doing his preflight and saw me staring at the aircraft. He asked me if I wanted to go and sit in the cockpit with him.  Of course I said yes, because I was very interested to see how they fly and some of the procedures done for this aircraft. When I sat in the Captain’s seat, he gave me his hat and showed me all the cool lights, nav systems and other interesting things in the cockpit. When it was time for me to go back to my seat, the pilot gave me some spare wings to keep and told me, he hoped that I would one day be in his spot. At this point I fell in love with everything aviation. I joined Mid Island Air summer camp for two years, when I was about twelve years old.  I took my first ever flight lesson at Mid Island Air. I was very nervous but the instructor was helpful and gave me great tips for the future. In those two years, I made new friends, flew lots of flights to Connecticut and Rhode Island. To continue my love for flying, I enrolled at the Eastern Suffolk Boces Aviation/Professional Pilot training program and earned two strips for passing my FAA medical exam. I also passed my FAA private pilots written exam. I am very happy to announce that I will be attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in the fall to pursue my dream of becoming an airline pilot.
