Nathaniel Stevenson

Growing up on a farm, I spent my days outside, and I found myself gazing up at the planes overhead more often than tending to my tasks. I grew determined to pursue a way to fly. As soon as I learned about Aerocamp at Mid Island Air, I eagerly registered for the upcoming summer. On the first day of camp, there I was, in the pilot seat, taxing on the runway next to a Boeing 737. Days later, I ventured to Groton-New London Airport, flying right over my family’s farm. I had come full-circle looking down at the place where I had spent years watching planes from the fields. My week at camp exceeded my expectations and further ignited my passion for flying. With the help of a scholarship, I was fortunate to be able to return to Aerocamp for a second summer and attend the flight academy as well. In addition to building my knowledge, I flew up the Hudson River Corridor. Communicating with the control tower at JFK and circling the Statue of Liberty were unforgettable highlights of this day. 

            Through Boy Scouts and NJROTC, I have developed a commitment to service. My unit visited the Air National Guard at Gabreski Airport where I not only got to fly in a C-130, but talk with members of the 106th Rescue Wing about their responsibilities. It was especially inspiring to hear of the bravery, dedication, and expertise they displayed in responding to the tragedy on 9/11. My goal is to become a pilot while attending the United States Air Force Academy. It is a privilege to receive the Louis Mancuso, Sr. Scholarship, and to honor both his contributions to aviation on Long Island and his service to our nation.
